So I’ve been trolling the interwebs looking for lesbian spanking fiction written by other authors for my spanking review series, and whilst I have found a few gems I will most certainly be sharing, I’ve also noticed an oddity in the way that lesbian spanking relationships are often treated. In the interests of full disclosure, I’m personally a woman all over the map of sexuality, but I enjoy writing relationships between women, lesbians, because they take on new and interesting dimensions from the typical authoritarian male / female spanking relationships, in which a male is the spanker often purely by virtue of being male.
Anyway, here’s a little whine / rant about much of the lesbian spanking fiction I came across. Though many authors seem comfortable with writing spanking scenes between women, they do not seem so comfortable with portraying the romantic relationship between them. Characters leap wildly into sex with little to no preamble, they start slapping bottoms for next to no reason whatsoever and things usually end on a strangely flat note.
This seems to be because lesbians are treated almost like un-people in some respects. They are portrayed as alluring, beautiful, but somehow devoid of anything but the drive to have sex. Why is this? Well, it is possible it is because some of these tales are penned by men with a penchant for action over romance, but in saying that, there are plenty of male authors who write emotional content well when it is between a man and a woman, and no doubt there are some male authors also able to grasp the intricacies of lesbian relationships as well. Sadly, many authors choose not to.
Fortunately, there are other authors that make up the balance. You’ll note that I briefly reviewed the site Alyx Fic yesterday, and that I also mentioned the very real feeling of domesticity and romance that is portrayed in those tales. There’s a realism that makes them come alive.
Unfortunately, and ironically in the past, a great deal of lesbian fiction has been aimed soley at men, and let’s face it, the man who is reading the lesbian fiction story isn’t likely to be as concerned with how Stacy feels about Tracey’s late nights at the office any further than they function as a plot device for a hot lesbian workaholic spanking. That, I believe, is why much lesbian fiction has a hollowness to it, because it wasn’t written for women who wanted to enjoy the progression and romantic tension of a spanking relationship, rather it was designed as pure wank material.
Lesbian spanking fiction for women needs to be more than spank, thrust, spank, it needs to blossom into its hotness, so that the hotness can be truly enjoyed for what it is, not (purely) entertainment for men, but the product of the love and affection shared between two women.
Red bottomed lesbians have feelings too.
