PT 15: Sweet Little Lies

You know you shouldn’t be doing this, but you turn around and start following Terra. She’s far enough away that she doesn’t notice you, but she soon turns a corner so you hustle quickly so as not to lose her. Just as you turn the corner, you see her taking a right up ahead. She’s walking quite quickly, so you have to speed up a little more. You come around the next corner, shuffle-running to move as quickly and quietly as possible – and run right into Terra.

She’s standing there with her arms folded over her chest, a slight frown on her face as you literally skid to a halt in front of her.

“What are you doing, cadet?”

“Uh…”

Her right brow rises ever so slightly. You gulp. Your mind is blank as you search for excuses.

“Uhm. I was… er…”

She’s still looking at you with that unimpressed expression.

“Checking in!” You blurt. “You said I have to check in with you, and I was just wondering when that was?”

“I’ll discuss that with you in class tomorrow,” she says.

“Oh, yes, thank you, ma’am,” you stammer, your face burning bright red as you breathe an internal sigh of relief.

“… along with the consequences of lying to your instructor.”

“Wha?” You squeak the question.

“You just lied to me, didn’t you, cadet?”

Fuck. You open your mouth to deny it, but she shakes her head at you.

“Don’t lie to me twice, cadet.”

“Jesus,” you mumble under your breath. “I’m not lying,” you lie.

“Twice,” she nods, her cool gaze running over your heated face. “Would you care to make it a third time, cadet? I can assure you the consequence will be much more interesting then.”

How does she do this? How does she make you twist yourself into knots with a few simple words? You can barely stand this, your nerves and embarrassment are getting the better of you…

“I’m not lying! And even if I was lying, you can’t prove it! You can’t see inside my head!”

There is silence following your outburst.

“Well,” Terra says. “Following me, lying about it, and then engaging in disrespectful conduct. We will have a very interesting meeting tomorrow, cadet. I suggest you get a good night’s sleep. You’re going to need it. Now, do I need to walk you back to your dormitory and put you to bed myself, or can you find your own way there?”

Can you?
