“Shall I be a potato, and you a burning leopard?”
-Terence McKenna, The Psychedelic Society, 1987
I love this “psychedellics disolve belief systems”. Really enjoying this guy. Thanks for sharing. 🙂
There’s a lot to enjoy about McKenna :).
He has a great voice to go to sleep to and have psychedelic dreams.
I don’t believe all of what he says, but I enjoy hearing him say it regardless.
May I ask which parts you believe? I’m rather curious.
Anything to do with his Timewave theory I wouldn’t subscribe to. In my opinion he’s at his best when speaking about culture and society – what creates freedom and what takes it away. He has an impressive, almost encyclopedic understanding of philosophy.
Hey, can’t watch the video now but the quote on its own is awesome.
Futilely Trying to Grasp McKenna
Join points of perception to form one reality
Make experience prime, the one totality
Discard all idioms, rules, ideologies
Religious, political, cultural mythologies
Toss notions of nations, gender and species
Achieve symbiosis of we, thee and me
Meld all in one swarming, genetic hive
Mind blowing, soul freeing, cosmic, alive!
To grasp such a notion all conflict would smother
For all would be one, there would be no ‘other’
Interconnectedness seen indisputable
One with the universe, no form immutable
Choose what you will, leopard, tomato,
Mold in a Petri dish, or couch potato
Just Be, in the moment, swirling and reeling
A part of the whole, connected by feeling.
Whatever consciously we choose to be
We are but stardust, with one destiny.
Wow! Nothing futile about that understanding, That was brilliant, sparrow! 🙂
I curtsy. I blush.
Indeed. Really awesome. Thanks for explaining McKenna to me in verse birdie! 🙂
You could sell that on a poster or a t-shirt or something, sparrow!
I have no idea what that quote’s about, but it’s great. 🙂 For some reason it reminds of the line from Dr. Who (which I got from TMT, as I’ve never seen the show myself):
Madame Vastra: “Good evening. I’m a lizard woman from the dawn of time, and this is my wife.”
Ah, for a job coming up with lines like that! 😀
The lizard woman is beautiful, isn’t she? Glad you’re getting some Doctor, Alyx.
