And back to Tempus Brat…
You whimper as tears roll down your cheeks. It’s not hard to cry, you’ve been subjected to such strangeness and pain over the past few hours that the tears come entirely naturally. The spanking hurt, but being put over a strange woman’s lap and slapped hard is the least of your worries. It’s the waking up in a strange new world where nobody knows what a zipper is that has you really concerned. Either you’ve gone mad, or weirdness of an order of magnitude beyond your comprehension has taken place. You consider responding to the guard’s question with false bravado, but your nerve fails you.
“I’m sorry, I.. don’t know where I am… I don’t know what’s going on. I’m scared.”
The note of genuine distress in your voice clearly touches a nerve with the guard. “There’s no need to be scared, girl,” she says reassuringly, patting your bottom lightly.
You squirm over her lap, feeling unexpectedly comforted by her touch. When they’re not hitting you, her hands feel strong and warm. “But I’ve been sentenced to five years labor, for something I don’t even remember doing,” you say plaintively.
The guard nods, but her expression is inscrutable. “We may yet reassess your fate,” she concedes finally as she stands you up. “Something strange has taken place here.”
“You’re telling me,” you agree, wiping the tears off your face with the back of your sleeve.
“I will speak with the Queen.”
The guard makes to leave, but you reach out for her as she makes her way towards the door.
“What is it?” she asks. There’s a hint of impatience in her tone that scares you a little, but her being mad is not as bad as being left to rot in the cell for as long as they decide to leave you there.
“Please… don’t leave me alone in this cell. I’m not a criminal,” you plead.
She pauses a moment and looks you up and down. “Very well,” she says eventually. “The Queen may want to question you. Come.”
She beckons for you to follow her and you eagerly leave the the cell. Trailing in her wake you discover that the world around you looks much like the picture books you read greedily in your youth. The air is clear and clean, the only scents on the breeze are organic ones. In the distance, you hear the merry shouts and babble of people in conversation.
It’s clear from the high walls and ramparts around you that you’re in some kind of castle or fortress, built entirely out of stone. The cells where you were held are outside the castle proper and heavily guarded by sullen, hairy looking men wearing enough metal to weigh down an ox. They salute the guard as she walks by them “Lady Constance!” one barks in a rough voice of respect.
Constance leads you towards an archway, but before you reach it, you see that there is a thin path of grass and free space between the walls. You don’t know where that grassy path leads, but it calls to you with the seductive promise of freedom.
