“Sadie!” Rigel’s exasperated voice sounded loud above the sounds of women sparring, but Sadie turned a blind ear as she sprinted out of the gymnasium, holding a pair of Rigel’s tighty-whity panties aloft.

“Brat, I will tear that hide up when I catch you!” Rigel threatened from the rear, giving chase.

As she gasped for breath and rounded the corner with a furious Rigel hot on her heels, Sadie thought back to the fateful, albeit innocent enough seeming moment when everything had gone so hideously wrong.

Motors revved as the traffic light held by the fluffy cloud began the countdown. Red. Orange. Green! Sadie slammed the accelerator button down, only to spin out at the start line and end up a good few yards behind her competitors, a giant gorilla, a plumber, and a princess in a pink dress.

Gritting her teeth, Sadie swerved masterfully around a banana treacherously left on the track and hunted the leaders down. She would not lose again. Not this time.

A knock at the door behind her barely registered on her consciousness as she rounded a sandy corner and almost ran into a train.

“Sadie,” it was Kate’s voice. Sadie frowned. Kate knew better than to interrupt her at moments like these. In response, Sadie grunted and nodded her head at the television.

“Sadie.”

Why was Kate still saying her name? Was the house on fire? Had she contracted leprosy?

“Sadie!” Kate’s voice sounded oddly strained, but Sadie didn’t care. She was hyper-focused now, right on the princesses tail.

“It’s okay, I’ll wait.”

Fuck. Sadie skidded off the track and into a cactus. It was Rigel.

Rigel shifted uncomfortably on her bar stool, took a swig of her beer and sighed deeply. Around her, women were laughing, chatting, courting. In the middle of it all she was alone, more alone than she’d felt in a long time. Her backside was sore, her pride was wounded and her heart ached, remembering the look on Sadie’s face outside the gym. She’d fucked everything up so, so badly.

“Cheer up, it ain’t that bad.”

“We need to talk.” Rigel accosted Sadie when classes were done. Sadie noticed that she’d taken the time to shower and get changed, not to mention finish the class, so clearly the ‘need to talk’ wasn’t all that great.

Tank and Kate stood off a little ways, giving Rigel and Sadie a little privacy. Both looked worried in their own ways, though Sadie wasn’t at all sure as to why Tank cared so much, she’d barely said anything the whole time Sadie had been crying and cursing Rigel.

“I don’t think so,” Sadie said. Her tears had finally dried, and she wasn’t interested in starting more.

Sunday mornings were Sadie’s favorite mornings. Slow and lazy and without any obligation to anyone, they were the perfect day. If Sadie had her way, all mornings would be Sunday mornings. On this particular Sunday she had woken up at 10.30 am with a slightly warm behind from one of Rigel’s ministrations, stretched and dozed in until 11.30, by which time her stomach was threatening to eat its way out of her body.

With a growling tummy, she made her way into the kitchen, scuffing her feet and with her doggie motif pajamas buttoned in a skewed fashion which made one side hang down a good few inches longer than the other, which was hiked up almost to her belly button.

Wiping sleep out of her eyes and muttering to herself about having to always eat food every day, Sadie accidentally walked into the wall, swore and ricocheted herself back towards the kitchen, where the scent of brewing coffee called to her.

Here’s a bit more…. the aftermath, if you will…

Things came to pass much as Martine had said they would. Within the week, Rigel had moved out, leaving Kate and Sadie to their own devices once more. She seemed utterly unaware of the trouble that had been caused by her leaving, which Sadie blamed her for in spite of the fact that both Sadie and Kate had gone out of their way to be as falsely pleasant as possible to both Rigel and Martine. If Rigel wanted to go, she could go, there was no point getting all soppy and telling her that it hurt Sadie’s feelings. Sadie hoped that it would be easier after Rigel left, and in a way, it was. There was no daily reminder that she was being abandoned for not being pretty enough or sophisticated enough or whatever it was that Rigel saw in Martine.

Scrub. Scrub. Scrub. Scrub.

Raw knees, sore wrists, and growing irritation were Sadie and Kate’s companions as they made their way through the first day of their punishment, washing the floor of the martial arts school by hand.

“This sucks,” Sadie noted observantly, sitting back on her heels and tossing her damp rag into the bucket. Though they’d already been going for almost three quarters of an hour, they had barely made their way across a quarter of the floor, which was totally gross and caked in foot sweat.

“Yeah,” Kate agreed miserably, pushing stray strands of brown hair out of her eyes. “Should have taken the spanking.”

“You can drop the act now Sadie, we saw you from across the street through the window. Woodland camouflage doesn’t work real well in an urban environment when you stick your head out of the bushes,” Rigel observed, taking a swig from her beer.

“Oh,” Sadie said softly, hanging her head as she carried the sodden paper towels back to the kitchen for disposal.

“Yes. Oh.”

“Are you mad?” the question was asked in a small voice.

“Me? No. Stacy wasn’t pleased though. The word ‘psycho’ came up several times in conversation.”

“Sadie was…” Kate began to answer for Sadie again, but Rigel turned and gave her a look that stopped her runaway mouth dead in its tracks.

“When did Sadie become unable to speak for herself?”

“Er, uhm, I don’t know. I’m going to bed,” Kate said with forced lightness. “You two have fun. Try to keep the plaster on the ceiling this time.” She turned and scooted into her room at an impressive pace.

“Kate!” Rigel raised her voice. “Get your butt back out here.”

Sadie felt her stomach sink. Rigel knew something was up. She knew it.
