Then again, Georgia was rarely impressed by anything Anita did.

Georgia was Anita’s antithesis. Where Anita was short and petite with choppy brown hair that scraped her shoulders and always threatened to fall into her eyes, Georgia was taller and her slick blonde hair would never have thought to cross her in that way. The ideal female top is a mysterious beast, mostly because she is so many different things to different people. In thinking about the ‘perfect female top’, I found myself thinking about the three most popular fictional female tops I’ve written. What unites them? What separates them? Are there common threads that can be distilled to create a jus d’ perfect top? I put on my wizard hat and lab coat and have a look-see.

Rael, of Rebel Princess fame, is certainly one of the most widely favored tops I’ve ever written. I, of course, cannot say precisely how she is perceived, but she was written as being powerful, both physically and politically, incredibly independent and totally in control of her own life. Her style of domination is not particularly aggressive, if anything it is maternal.

Mackenzie, from Little Miss and the Law is probably the next in line in female tops. She’s different from Rael in many ways. First and foremost, she inhabits a contemporary world rather than a fantasy one. Mackenzie is your typical, high powered career woman. She is hard nosed enough to have made headway in a male dominated profession, but still feminine enough to look hot in a power suit. Unlike Rael, whose primary concern is that those in her care don’t do anything fantastically stupid and accidentally off themselves, Mackenzie requires a higher standard of obedience. She is aware of her role as a dominant figure and takes it seriously.

Rigel, from Obeying Rigel is yet another kettle of fish all together. Whilst Mackenzie and Rael are both typically feminine in appearance and expression, Rigel is an unashamedly butch martial artist who dominates others simply because it is in her nature to do so. She can be thoughtless and even selfish at times and she has far more rough edges and imperfections than her fictional counterparts. She is redeemed somewhat by her ability to calmly deal with smart mouthed bratty behavior that would drive other tops quite mad, and perhaps even more by the raw physicality she brings to the table.

So, what can we take from these three, very different, yet very effective female tops? They are all very certain and centered in themselves, that’s for sure. Even when they’re wrong, as Rigel occasionally is, they don’t lack self confidence when it comes to imposing their will on the world. Confidence breeds confidence, even in bottoms that have trouble putting confidence in anything much at all. I believe there’s a Julie Andrews song on the subject.

I also observed that they’re all quite warm hearted souls with more than a touch of White Knight about them. Rael finds Kai getting hacked to death on the side of a mountain and lends a hand (either without thought of any possible danger to herself, or knowing that she’s so damn bad ass they couldn’t touch her anyway, either way it’s totally hot,) Mackenzie rescues Stephanie from a car accident and Rigel, well Rigel refrains from beating the hell out of Sadie where she stands in spite of the fact that she very much deserves it.

So, to summarize, a good female top should probably be:

A) Ass kicking. (If not physically, in some other sense. Power comes in many forms.)
B) Compassionate.
C) Not so compassionate that a well earned spanking won’t be delivered.

Feel free to share your thoughts on what makes a great female top (fictional or otherwise) (But please put on a lab coat and protective eye wear. We wouldn’t want the top juices getting in your eyes now, would we?)

This is a little excerpt from the next ebook I’ll be putting out ‘Trinity in Trouble’. It’s based on the few installments of ‘Our Lady of Discipline’ on the site, but it’s been changed quite extensively and now has much more trouble and much more lesbianism, which is nice. It’s nice. “You’re not supposed to be talking to me,” Anna smiled. There was no fear or warning in her tone, she said it simply as a matter of fact.

She didn’t. She returned Trinity’s gaze entirely neutrally for a long moment, then took off her spectacles, cleaned them on her shirt and put them back on.

“Is this going to be a contest?”

“No,” Trinity prickled.“It’s not a contest.”

“Hm, well what else would you risk your ass for?”

“How did you know about me?”

Anna shrugged and glanced up at the building that loomed above them. “She’ll know we did this, you know.”

“Tell me how you knew.”

Anna’s blue gaze dropped from the window and settled on Trinity. “Let’s just say they don’t have the best security here, and I like to know who I’m dealing with.”

“Can you get people out of here?” The door of the main building was open and a uniformed member of staff was looking straight at them as she manipulated the coded lock on the gate. Ms Havik was already aware of the infraction it seemed, and had sent one of her lackeys to deal with the problem.

“Probably,” Anna replied casually. “A lot of people don’t want to get out.”

The staffer was in the grounds now and making her way over towards them at a fast clip. Fortunately Anna and Trinity had chosen a table fairly far away from the gate to have their little conversation.
